Xochimilco is often referred to as the "Venice of Mexico" because of its network of canals that run through the neighborhood. Located in the Southern part of Mexico City, the Xochimilco canals were built by the Aztecs as a way to transport goods and as a means of irrigation for the chinampas, which are small, man-made islands that were used for agriculture. The chinampas are still visible today and are a unique feature of Xochimilco.
The canals and chinampas are similar to the way Venice was built and the network of canals that runs through the city. Additionally, the boats, called "trajineras" that you can take in Xochimilco, are reminiscent of the gondolas in Venice.
Here are 4 great tips for heading to Xochimilco:
1. We recommend going on a weekend! Yes it will be more crowded, but the energy will be incredible. You’ll love the buzzy vibe.
2. Take note of the unique names of the different boats: Traditionally the boats utilize classic Mexican first names for women, but there are a few unique ones, including a boat allegedly named after Beyonce!
3. Stop by Isla de Las Munecas for one of the most unique sights there: this island in xochimilco hosts a bounty of haunting, withered dolls hanging from trees that were allegedly put there decades ago to pay homage to a young girl who drowned at Xochimilco
4. Assemble a great crew for your boat! The boat ride is typically 2-3 hours long and you can fit 10-15 people on it. Make sure you have great company to enjoy the sights with, and enjoy the music, dancing, and sunshine while you explore this extremely special place in Mexico City.
